Quantum Physics

Close your eyes for a second and think of the smallest particles on the planet. Most of you probably thought about atoms or cells – but what about the particles that make up both atoms and cells? Atoms are made up of protons, electrons, and neutrons, and although they may seem simple to the eye, every single thing surrounding them is shrouded in mystery. That mystery is called Quantum Physics.

History of Quantum Physics

Although Quantum physics didn’t start at one point in one place, most scientists agree that the theory was developed by Neils Bohr, Erwin Schrödinger, and many other scientists in the 1920s. Each scientist present in the discovery of quantum physics had their own spin on it. All of them discovered or predicted something which eventually added up to form a complex theory that is greatly studied in the world today.   

Schrödinger’s cat

Schrödinger’s cat is an experiment by the scientist Erwin Schrödinger in the early 1900s that caused both questioning and astonishment. The experiment states that if you place a cat in a box with a radioactive chemical, it has a 50% chance of dying. So, after you open the box, the cat is either dead or alive. But, Quantum physics explains that subatomic particles can be in 2 places at once. So, before you open the box, the cat is both dead and alive. At the same time, after you open it, the cat is either dead or alive. This is just the tip of the iceberg in quantum physics; there are so many amazing things that can be confusing and astonishing at the same time!

The Entanglement Theory

The entanglement theory states that when two particles get “bonded” very strongly, they become entangled and their possibilities become linked. Quantum physics proves that even if you separate those two particles, they will never lose their entanglement. One example is if you placed an entangled spinning wheel on earth and the other wheel on the moon. Imagine that the spinning wheels have two colors – blue and pink. If you spin the one on earth and it lands on blue, then the one on the moon will definitely land on pink. 

Photon Teleportation

As an experiment to prove Quantum entanglement, scientists gathered and planned an extraordinary experiment. They entangled 2 photons which are particles of quantum light energy and they placed them on 2 islands a few 100 miles from each other. Then, they brought in another photon and made it interact with one of the entangled photons. Then, something amazing happened! The new particle brought in somehow ended up in place of the other photon on the different island! It was as if the photon had magically transported to the other island because of the entanglement experiment. But now, we call that magic quantum physics. 

Contradiction

All great theories have at least some quirks and since quantum physics is still unexplainable to some extent, it has received a lot of criticism throughout time. Albert Einstein was one of the main critiques of this incredible theory. He claimed that physics was supposed to be based only on logic and can only be proved with math and calculations, and since quantum physics was mainly probability, he didn’t accept it as truly a part of science. 

Conclusion

Quantum physics is a door of possibilities to the advancement of mankind. We can use it to teleport long distances, find out all the secrets of nature, and so much more–only if we can unlock its true potential. Developing quantum physics is really important and the first step to do that is to truly understand and appreciate the fascinating science behind it.
