Did you know that there is no full moon? And that there is no dark side of the moon? Certainly, many of the facts about the moon presented below are unknown to a large number of people.
The moon, scientists explain, was created as a result of a collision known as a giant blow. Here’s how it happened: A huge object, the size of Mars, collided with the earth just before the sun and the solar system were born 4.6 billion years ago. At first, the moon was a kind of cloud that went into orbit around the earth. Then gradually the cloud began to cool and to condense the rings of small, hard bodies that, after connecting, formed the moon.
The Earth contributes to the “rising” of the Moon
Every day, if not at the same time, the moon rises in the east and sits in the west, just like the sun and other stars. The moon also makes an orbit around the earth once every 29.5 days. In the sky, this is a gradual eastward movement, although it is not noticeable when observed. But that explains why the moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each day than the day before. It also explains why we sometimes see the moon during the day.
The Moon has no Dark Side
Contrary to what you’ve probably heard, there is no such term as the “dark side” of the moon. However, there is one side that cannot be seen from the ground. This is why the earth’s gravitational forces long ago contributed to the fact that the rotation of the moon around its axis slowed down. When the moon’s rotation was slowed down enough to match its orbital time (the time it takes for the moon to move around the earth), the effect stabilized.
So the moon rotates around the earth, and around its axis is always the same time, but we only see part of it.
Gravity is much weaker
The size of the moon is about 27 percent of the size of the earth and is less massive. The gravity on the moon is about 1/6 of the gravity characteristic of the earth. If you want to throw a stone on the moon, it will fall much more slowly than on the ground. If you weigh 150 pounds (68 kilograms) on the ground, you will weigh 25 pounds (11 kilograms) on the moon.
The Moon is not round
The moon is a spheroid, not completely round but egg-shaped. If you walk down the street and look at the moon, you will see that one of its little pistons is looking directly at you. It is also worth noting that the lunar center is not a center in any geometrical concept, it is about 2 km (1.2 mi) away from it. The earth also has bulges in the middle part.
Attention please! “Moonlight”
Astronauts from “Apollo” used the seismometer during their visit to the moon and found that everything is not so smooth on the planet in a geological sense. It is believed that the gravitational pull of the earth causes small moonquakes that occur a few kilometers from the surface. Sometimes small flaws appear above the surface and gas comes out of them.
Scientists believe the moon’s core is likely hotter than the earth’s core and may even have partially melted. However, data from NASA’s geological lunar ship in 1999 showed that the lunar core is very small: about 2-4 percent of the earth’s total mass. It’s tiny compared to the earth’s core, which makes up about 30 percent of the planet’s mass.
Socially Distanced Moon
With every second the moon moves away from us. Every year the moon steals the energy of the earth’s rotation and moves 4 cm above its orbit. Scientists say that when the moon was formed 4.6 billion years ago, it was only 14,000 mi (22,530 km) from the earth. Now, this distance is more than 280,000 mi (450,000 km).
