How the moon formed: Big hit

The moon, scientists explain, was created as a result of a collision known as a giant blow. Here’s how it happened: A huge object, the size of Mars, collided with the earth just before the sun and the solar system were born 4.6 billion years ago. At first, it was a kind of cloud that went into orbit around the earth. Then gradually the cloud began to cool and to condense the rings of small, hard bodies that, after connecting, formed the moon.
